Day 1, Beginning in Anacortes
Your romantic getaway starts in the quaint seaside town of Anacortes, found on the northern tip of Fidalgo Island. Known for its stunning waterfront, vibrant arts scene, and access to the San Juan Islands, Anacortes sets the stage for romance.
If you find yourself landing in Anacortes on the second Saturday of the month (Jan, Feb, March, April), why not begin with a leisurely stroll through the Anacortes Farmers Market inside the Depot for local produce, artisan crafts, and a taste of the Skagit Valley’s bounty. With over 80 crops grown here, there is quite an array to choose from. The open-air market begins the first Saturday in May and runs through the last Saturday in October. Feel like a local as you shop the stalls, purchasing your day’s vegetables directly from the farmers themselves. And your four-legged family members are most welcome.
Need a pick me up? Grab a delicious pastry and coffee at a local favorite like Pelican Bay Books & Coffee. Afterward, explore the shops and art galleries along Commercial Avenue, Anacortes’s main street. Pop into funky boutiques like Chilly Rain Retro, peruse Predecessors antique mall, and check out the Clayhouse art studio where you can create your very own clay date (thinking of those steamy scenes from ghost with Demi Mooe and Patrick Swayzee) Reservatons are recommended.
Perhaps an afternoon walk sounds inviting. A scenic hike at Washington Park not only gets your steps in but offers you a chance for some Forest Bathing, Pacific Northwest style.
This beautiful park offers breathtaking views of the San Juan Islands, the Olympic Mountains, and the Puget Sound. The short, easily accessible trails wind through forests and along the rocky coastline, offering numerous photo opportunities. Pick up a picnic lunch from GERE-a-DELI before heading out to the park then enjoy it at one of the scenic overlooks. For a truly romantic experience, find a spot at the Washington Park Overlook to watch the sunset paint the sky with vibrant colors. You will feel on top of the world.
After the sun goes down, indulge in a romantic dinner at one of Anacortes’s excellent restaurants. Nothing shouts “romance” more than a candlelit dinner of fresh, homemade pasta, and at Nonna Luisa’s they serve up authentic Italian food and experience.
After dinner, enjoy a nightcap at a cozy bar or take a moonlit walk along the waterfront. Consider staying at the charming and historic Majestic Inn and Spa, known for its luxurious accommodations and stunning views, especially from its rooftop lounge.
Pro Tip: Book a Whale Watching Tour with Island Adventures for an unforgettable day’s adventure. Schedules vary seasonally.

Day 2, La Conner: A Tiny Town with Big Charm
A short drive from Anacortes brings you to La Conner, a picturesque waterfront village renowned for its artistic community, charming shops, and stunning views of the Swinomish Channel.
An iconic destination spot first established in 1869, La Conner is one of the places locals and travelers love to visit again and again. Named one of the most romantic getaways in Washington, it captures the sweet simplicity of small-town life.
Start your morning arm-in-arm, strolling the length of town along LaConner’s boardwalk. From this angle, you have a fabulous perspective of The Rainbow Bridge, reaching across the channel to connect the town with the Swinomish tribe and reservation on the other side. The bridge has become as iconic a landmark as this quaint tourist town. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including herons, eagles, and seals. Stop by the La Conner Marina to glimpse the local fishing boats and spot some playful seals.
Walk back up First Street to discover the charming downtown filled with artisan boutiques,off-beat antique shops, and a culinary array of restaurants to tempt anyone’s palette. For a quick lunch, stop in one of the local pubs, the La Conner Brewery or La Conner Pub and Eatery, for a modern twist on comfort food accompanied by stunning scenery of the channel.
Wile away the afternoon hours visiting the Museum of Northwest Art to appreciate this region’s artistic heritage and local artists.
Check into your room at the La Conner Channel Lodge before dinner and relax on the veranda overlooking the waterfront. Take an evening walk to Nell Thorn, enjoy a romantic dinner with a view, and watch the stars appear in the night sky.

Day 3, Sedro-Woolley: The Gateway to the North Cascades
Venture inland to Sedro-Woolley, the gateway to the North Cascades National Park. This rural town offers a glimpse into the region’s logging history and provides access to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Pacific Northwest.
Start your adventure with a visit to the Sedro-Woolley Museum, which showcases the fascinating history of the logging and railroad industries in this town. Afterward, grab a hearty breakfast at a local diner like Joy’s Bakery. Walk along downtown Sedro-Woolley and you will eventually bump into a wooden bear or a stunning mural that brings to life the area’s history. To learn more, take a self-guided walking tour of Sedro-Woolley street art and step back in time.
After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive along the Cascade Loop Highway. This stunning route winds through the foothills of the North Cascades, offering breathtaking views of Mt. Baker, waterfalls, forests, and rivers. Stop at the North Cascades National Park Visitor Center to learn more about the park and its diverse ecosystems. Feeling more adventurous? Try hiking Heather-Maple Pass Loop Trail, Blue Lake Trail, or Washington Pass for some stellar views.
Pro Tip: The weather can quickly turn damp and chilly when hiking diverse terrains in the PNW mountains. Even when day hiking, keep in mind the “10-essentials” and plan appropriately.
